Polar lipid fatty acids as indicators of trophic associations in a deep-sea vent system community ArchiMer
Colaco, Ana; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Guezennec, Jean.
The polar lipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles of invertebrates living in chemosynthetic communities can indicate the degree to which these animals depend on specific types of bacteria. To identify the nutritional sources of various species from deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a Principal Component Analysis was performed using individual PLFA profiles as descriptors. Two associations representing different feeding groups were identified: (i) mussels, commensal polychaetes and gastropods, (ii) shrimps and crabs. The first association relies more on sulphide-oxidizing bacteria, while the second one has more anaerobic sulphate-reducing bacteria biomarkers. Other small invertebrates reveal different diets. The polychaete Amathys lutzi shows...

Gonçalves,José Francisco de C.; Fernandes,Andreia V.; Oliveira,Antonio Fernando M.; Rodrigues,Lílian F.; Marenco,Ricardo A..
The contents of the main components of the primary metabolism (soluble sugars, starch, proteins, oils, fatty acids) and minerals (P, Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu) were characterized in seeds of five Brazilian Amazon tree species (Andira parviflora, Bertholletia excelsa, Helicostylis tomentosa, Hymenaea parviflora, and Parkia pendula). Soluble sugar contents were high in P. pendula seeds (14 %), whereas starch predominated in A. parviflora seeds (58.7 %). A. parviflora and H. parviflora seeds were rich in proteins (35.1 % and 32.4 %, respectively). The oil contents ranged from 1.4 % in A. parviflora to 70.7 % in B. excelsa. Only B. excelsa and P. pendula seeds may be considered oilseeds, with 70.7 % and 28.4 % oil, respectively. The fatty acid compositions...

Idoniboye-Obu, T.I.E.; Ayinla, O.A..
Preparative and analytical thin layer Chromatography have been used to purify and separate phospholipids from the total lipids of Callinectes latimanus (Decapoda: Portunidae) and Cardisoma armatum Decapoda: Gecarcinidae). Comparison of Rf values of standards with standard Rf values in the solvent system employed indicated the presence of phosphatidy 1 ethanolamine (PE; Rf = 0.61), phosphatidy 1 choline (PC; Rf =03.34), phophatidic acid (PA; Rf = 0.76) and phosphatidy 1 – N-methy 1 ethanolamine (PNME; Rf = 0.85). An unidentified spot with Rf = 0.93 was also detected. Gas liquid chromatography of the total lipid extract from the two Crustaceans indicated that the predominant saturated fatty acid in the two Crustaceans is palmitic acid (C16:0) with oleic...

Alencar,Stephan Alexander da Silva; Kiefer,Charles; Nascimento,Karina Márcia Ribeiro de Souza; Viana,Luiz Henrique; Gonçalves,Liliane Maria Piano; Rocha,Gabriel Cipriano; Corassa,Anderson; Abreu,Rodrigo Caetano de.
ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ractopamine concentrations on swine fat and meat lipid profiles. Ninety finishing barrows, initially weighing 71.9±4.4kg, were distributed in a randomized block design in three ractopamine concentrations (0, 10 and 20ppm) with fifteen replicates of two animals in each. Gas chromatography was used to analyze the lipid profiles of backfat and meat. The inclusion of ractopamine in the diet changed (P<0.05) α-linolenic acid and eicosatrienoic acid concentrations in the backfat but did not affect (P>0.05) any of the other fatty acids or indexes evaluated. In the meat, a significant effect (P<0.05) was observed on nine fatty acids evaluated, with a decrease (P<0.05) in lauric, myristic,...

Response of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) larvae to different dietary levels and forms of supply of medium-chain fatty acids ArchiMer
Fontagne, Stéphanie; Corraze, Genevieve; Bergot, Pierre.
The effects of dietary medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) on survival, growth and fatty acid composition of first-feeding carp larvae were investigated in two 21-day feeding trials. In trial 1, one diet CO was supplemented with 10% coconut oil, two diets, M1 and M2 with 1.7 or 4.2% interesterified medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCT), and two other diets T1 and T2 with 1% tricaprylin and 0.7% tricaprin, or 2.5% tricaprylin and 1.7% tricaprin. The five diets were made isolipidic (18% of dry diet) with triolein and compared to a control diet without MCFA. With a low dietary level (1% of dry diet) of caprylic acid (C8:0), final survival and mean weight of larvae fed CO, M1 and T1 were not significantly different from those of control (68 +/- 6% and 62 +/- 8 mg,...

Seasonal dependence on seagrass detritus and trophic niche partitioning in four copepod eco-morphotypes ArchiMer
Mascart, Thibaud; De Troch, Marleen; Remy, François; Michel, Loic; Lepoint, Gilles.
Benthic copepods dominate meiofaunal communities from marine phytodetritus, both in terms of numerical abundance and species diversity. Nevertheless, ecological factors driving copepod co-existence and population dynamics are still largely unknown. Here, we aimed to explore feeding habits of four copepod species commonly found in Mediterranean seagrass detritus accumulations, representing distinct eco-morphotypes (planktonic, phytal, epibenthic and mesopsammic). Joint use of fatty acid and stable isotope trophic markers showed that co-occurring harpacticoid copepods have diversified diets. Contrary to what was expected, microphytobenthos does not serve as their main food source. Instead, we found evidence from both techniques that major food items include...

Seasonal Variation of Lipids and Fatty Acids of the Microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata Grown in Outdoor Large-Scale Photobioreactors ArchiMer
Olofsson, Martin; Lamela, Teresa; Nilsson, Emmelie; Berge, Jean-pascal; Del Pino, Victoria; Uronen, Pauliina; Legrand, Catherine.
While focus in oil-producing microalgae is normally on nutrient deficiency, we addressed the seasonal variations of lipid content and composition in large-scale cultivation. Lipid content, fatty acid profiles and mono- di- and triglycerides (MAGs, DAGs, and TAGs) were analyzed during May 2007-May 2009 in Nannochloropsis oculata grown outdoors in closed vertical flat panels photobioreactors. Total lipids (TL) ranged from 11% of dry weight (DW) in winter to 30% of DW in autumn. 50% of the variation in TL could be explained by light and temperature. As the highest lipid content was recorded during autumn indicating an optimal, non-linear, response to light and temperature we hypothesize that enhanced thylakoid stacking under reduced light conditions resulted...
